A Journey of Thousand Miles Starts with Single Step Essay Example For Students
A Journey of Thousand Miles Starts with Single Step Essay A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, I have recently learned how true this statement is and started to realize that it applies to just about everything in my life, From college, to getting over the loss of a good friend, to starting new relationships. Ever since I was a little girl I talked about going to college. As got into high school I started to receive letters and information from different colleges. But the fact that was actually going to go didnt hit me until I had to start picking out and narrowing down the college I wanted to go to in my junior year. Now that Im entering my second half of my senior year I have to pick out which colleges apply to and soon will attend. The rest of my life started with the small step of dreaming of going to college. Over the past few years I have lost many close and dear friends. Each time received the bad news that someone else had passed away the pain I felt was unbearable and like my Whole world came crashing down. Time went on and have learned to accept that no one lives forever and that it was just that persons time to pass on. I hue also learned to hind of each persons life as a blessing and that the end is not a horrible thing but just makes us appreciate each person around us more-After losing so many people in a short period of time I became very wary of making new friends. For some reason I thought that if got to know someone new I would lose someone else. I kept pushing people away, trying to protect myself from feeling more pain. Thankfully over the summer had a chance to realize that thought wrong. There were so many people around me that wanted to be my friend and I was going out. By the time got back to school my whole attitude had changed. People that I had pushed away were still willing to be my friend and I accepted them. Now I have some really great trends that are there to help me out whenever I need them. Most important thing feel though is that they need me.
Why Did the British Want to Have a Trading Settlement in Singapore free essay sample
In this essay, I would like to discuss on why the British wanted to have a trading settlement in Singapore. The British needed a new trading settlement in the region. This was to break the Dutch monopoly in the Malay Archipelago, because, though the British then had already established two trading settlements at Penang and Bencoolen, they were not located near the main trading area in the Archipelago, thus were not suited to become major trading centres. Penang was located too far up, thus away from the Straits of Malacca, the main ship passageway for the India-China trade. Bencoolen, on the other hand, faced the Indian Ocean, overseeing the entrance to the Sunda Straits, so it was a much less important area. As a result, the Dutch continued to spread their monopoly of trade to more and more areas in the region. The British were afraid that their commercial trade with China would be affected if the Dutch continued to occupy more areas in the Archipelago. So, Sir Stamford Raffles, the Lieutenant Governor of the British colony at Bencoolen, reasoned that to compete with the Dutch, a new trading port in the region was needed. Singapore was chosen by the British as their new trading settlement because of its good position for trade. It was located at the southern entrance of the Straits of Melaka, thus occupied a central position on the main trade route between India and China. Due to its commanding position, it would become an important port of call for British on their way to China. Even better was the opening of Hong Kong and other treaty ports in China, which caused more traders to sail to China. Singapore, which was located on the main China route, would as a result benefit from this increased trade. Sir Stamford Raffles understood that Singapore would prosper, and become a major port for traders from Europe, the Middle East, India, China and Southeast Asia. So, Singapore was chosen. Singapore possessed an excellent natural harbour, one of the safest harbours in the region. Singapore had a deep harbour, which can make escellent docking facilities. It was inland, thus good for protecting the ships from stormy winds. It also had fresh water supplies, and timber for repairing ships. This made it a favourable place for the British to have a trading settlement. There was no Dutch presence in Singapore, thus able to be established as a British trading settlement, which was one reason why many other areas were unsuitable. Though it was under the sphere of influence of the Dutch through the Johor sultanate, Raffles found a way around it. Singapore was part of the Johor-Riau sultanate, which was under the control of Sultan Abdul Rahman, who was under the control of the Dutch. Of course, the Dutch would not allow the British to occupy Singapore as it would threaten the Dutch position. However, the Temenggong saw the arrival of Raffles as an opportunity for him to regain power in Johor court politics, having a European powerbacking his struggle. So, he informed Raffles of the ââ¬Ëlegal loopholeââ¬â¢ surrounding the coronation of Sultan Abdul Rahman. There was the story of how Tengku Abdul Rahman became the Sultan instead of his elder brother, Tengku Hussein, who was the rightful heir. When the former Sultan had died, Tengku Hussein was away in Pahang getting married, whereas his younger brother, Tengku Abdul Rahman was present. The Bugis chiefs in Riau, together with the Dutch, decided to make the younger son, Tengku Abdul Rahman the new Sultan. Tengku Hussein had no choice but to live quietly in Riau. After listening to the story, Raffles came up with plan that would allow the British to start their trading settlement in Singapore. Without Dutch presence, Raffles was able to maneuver stealthily without agitating the Dutch immediately. With the Temenggongââ¬â¢s support and Rafflesââ¬â¢ own sly intelligence, he arranged for Tengku Hussein to be smuggled into Singapore, recognized him as the rightful Sultan, and then obtained permission to start the settlement. So, the British managed to start their settlement in Singapore in spite of the original Dutch control over the island. On February 6 1819, Sultan Hussein and the Temenggong signed a treaty with Raffles, which allowed the British to start a trading settlement there. To conclude, the British wanted to have a trading settlement in Singapore as it was trying to replace the Dutch as the dominant power in the archipelago. The British also chose Singapore, and not other sites, as Singapore location was very favourable, being in the trade route between China and India. Singapore was also an excellent natural harbour, safe for protecting ships. Finally, though Singapore supposed to be under the Dutch, the political situation was very murky. Thus, the British were able to start a trading settlement here, and not at other sites which were under the strict control of the Dutch. So, Singapore was the most suitable place to help the British break the Dutch monopoly of trade in the Malay Archipelago.

Vanity Fair, Bleak House And Felix Holt Essay Example For Students
Vanity Fair, Bleak House And Felix Holt Essay Queen Victoria and her consort, Prince Albert, established the idea of a sound family life as a prime value of the mid-century years. In Vanity Fair, Bleak House, and Felix Holt we see a very different idea in family rapport. In Vanity Fair, the Sedley family gives us a good example of a family that did not see sound family life as a prime value. Though both Amelia and Jos live good lives, Amelia going to a respectable girlsââ¬â¢ academy, Miss Pinkertonââ¬â¢s, and Jos living abroad in India, neither of them is exceptional, though, an outsider might have seen them so. Amelia, whom we see being well liked by many and a seemingly lovely girl, is not as perfect as she seems. A major fault that Amelia has is her ideas about love. Though we see this more as the novel progresses, we see her relationship with George and see it more as an infatuation then a genuine love. She is in love with the appearance of George and the idea of George more than the person that he actually is. In chapter 3 we see Jos cruelly tricking Becky into eating spicy food which she has never tasted before. As for Mr. Sedley, he is not a loving father. He is very mean to Jos, calling him names and making fun of him at any given oppor tunity. Mr. Sedley is thoughtless, nasty and cruel. To an outsider like Becky, oneââ¬â¢s initial reaction to the Sedleys is that they are an ideal family, but once one is submerged into their world he/she begins to see the truth behind their fa?ade. Becky also idealizes them initially because she is an orphan. She comes from a family less fortunate than the Sedleys and therefore sees them as a perfect. Now that she is alone she must work to take care of herself. She is very unhappy about this because she likes being with the Sedleys and also because she has set her sights on Jos as a potential mate. In Bleak House the first encounter we have with a family or non-family is with Sir Leicester and Lady Dedlock. Not only are they are thirty years different in age but they have no children. We can infer that this bothers Lady Dedlock because of her reaction to the neighboring family who seem loving and caring. We become acquainted with Esther was raised by her godmother who treated he r horribly. She constantly reminded Esther that she was her motherââ¬â¢s ruin because of the circumstances under which she was born. Esther grew up without love and feeling worthless. After her godmotherââ¬â¢s death she becomes a ward of the crown and is taken care of by Mr. Jarndyce. (There are also other ward of the crown, Rich and Ada, whom Mr. Jarndyce takes care of.)The Jellyby family is quite dysfunctional. Mrs. Jellyby is only interested in her charity work. She ignores her children and her home leaving them in squalor. The house and the children are filthy. The only child who she pays attention to is Caddy, whom she uses as her secretary. Mrs. Pardiggle also does charity work, missionary work to be exact. Her five sons dislike her and are ferocious with discontent because she forces them to do that work as well and to contribute money to it. After Mr. Neckett dies, Charlotte, better known as Charlie, must take care of her siblings. Though they adore her this is far from what we would see as the ideal family situation. .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .postImageUrl , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:hover , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:visited , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:active { border:0!important; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:active , .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961 .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5aca070c8be6bf4884d56d8507891961:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Role of Ambition in Macbeth EssayIn Felix Holt the first family we encounter is the Transome family. They are quite dysfunction from the very beginning. We are told that Mr. and Mrs. Transome have not seen their son in many years nor have they ever met their grandson, this alone makes us begin to wonder what kind of familial ties they have. After Harold arrives he is nothing but mean and disrespectful to his mother and father. He arrives without his son, he bosses his mother around rearranging everyoneââ¬â¢s living quarters in the house to suit his own needs, and he makes fun of his father who is not well. Proving further the lack of family values in this household, we come to find out that Mr. Transome is not even Haroldââ¬â¢s father but the neighbor Mr. Jermyn in fact is. These examples taken from Vanity Fair, Bleak House, and Felix Holt show us that these novels, though written in the time of Queen Victoria, did not emanate the family values that she and Prince Albert tried to institute. The families portrayed in these novels are quite opposite. These families were far from having a sound family life; one might question calling them families at all. English Essays

Contract Performance Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Contract Performance - Research Paper Example The Federal acquisition Regulation provides federal agencies with different means of considering firmsââ¬â¢ past performance and prior experience with regards to how well these firms have performed in similar work. Federal Acquisition Regulation The Federal Regulations Requirement sets particular regulations with respect to solicitation procedures, as well as conditions and terms of contracts performance of the firms offered the contract, procedures of terminating contracts and controlling cost (Cushman and Myers, 1999, p.1623). Federal agencies that offer contracts include U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Public Buildings Service (PBS), and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Contract awarding in these agencies are usually based on procurement decision by the respective departments. In this case, past contract performance data is mainly based on the above named agencies with respect to regulations, procedures, and policies applied in awarding contracts to firms. However, co ntract performance review results cannot be generalized to all federal agencies contract procurement with consideration top past performance and experience. Consideration of past performance and prior experience of firms by federal agencies is applied during three phases of awarding contracts. The three phases include preparing solicitations, responsibility determination, and proposal evaluation with regards to whether firms to be awarded contracts have the potential and capability to perform satisfactorily. In addition, Federal Acquisition Regulation provides a broad spectrum of decisions-making processes by federal agencies with respect to methods of acquisition, evaluation aspects, relative comparisons alongside past performance and prior experience. Nevertheless, contract performance consideration factors outweigh price factor among federal agencies when determining factors to consider in awarding contracts to firms. Federal agencies use negotiated procurements and sealed biddin g to award contracts to firms. Although sealed bidding focuses on lowest price bidder, it puts into consideration that all bidders have attained required performance standards and responsibility. Lowest-price technical selection process is used in awarding contracts that require a clearly defined technicality, where there are minimal chances of unsuccessful performance of the contracts. Negotiated procurements use one or more processes of source selection processes such as trade-off processes, which consider non-price aspects of evaluation. In contracts where development work is required, contract performance considerations can be achieved through best-value trade-off selection process when awarding the contracts. Decisions by federal agencies to award contracts to particular firms is based on factors of evaluation and sub factors that are of key significance and importance to contract performance consideration. The Federal Acquisition Regulation generally requires that every select ion decision-making process should evaluate costs of the contracts to the government alongside quality consideration factors of the service through putting into consideration non-cost evaluation aspects. According to FAR cost principles, the contractors should follow specific criteria such as billings, contract proposals, and claims submitted to the government. Cost accounting standards seek to provide governments with an opportunity

Film Project - Movie Review Example Reputation, on the part of the media, the corporation or the personal, has been at stake; problematic and crucial. Cases have been filed. Conflicts escalated together with securing oneââ¬â¢s beloved. Wigand, who has been fired, reluctantly hesitates to expose yet managed to submit to the call of a journalist who has valued integrity, objectivity and professionalism to deliver high calibre news for the public to know and scrutinize. Publicity in exchange of privacy becomes intriguing and trivialized. Lies and truth interacts. Defamation and scrutiny has been rampant. The conflict unfolds as the story proceeds; integrating the reality and fantasy. Based on a life story, the discourse of politics becomes crucial as ideology complicates the complex scenario. Biased or Unbiased? Just or Unjust? Critical engagement becomes a crucial matter when public is at stake. Right are violated and uphold but does it really matter? Corporate interest has a political inclination that cannot be disregarded. In the film, it can be seen that in certain cases and scenarios like showing the clip of the CEO of denying the truth about the purpose of nicotine. 1 This already implicates the condition that the corporations have been after their personal interest as an institution without any regard to the effects expatriated towards the public. Manipulation happens in this case since the corporation tries its best to intervene with the decision of Dr. Wigand; especially about not exposing the complexities and technicalities that surround the operations of the company. 2 On a more personal level, there is already an intense conflict between which decision must be taken into account: Dr. Wigand has the option to say or not to say the secrets about the company as it might become a breach of contract with the corporation or a possible neglect of duty of ensuring the
